It’s no secret that we at Imageco love Leeds and as we continue to celebrate our amazing city, we’ve been admiring some classic indie shops in Leeds that have stood the test of time.
Firstly, we turn to Whitelocks, the oldest public house in Leeds. Opening back in 1715 under the name ‘Turk’s Head’ before being sold to the Whitelock family in 1867. The family added in the classic long marble topped bar and etched mirrors which still exist in the pub today. The pub has seen more traffic than grand central station and has even had a Royal visit from Prince George! This building truly highlights Leeds indie roots and is described as ‘The very heart of Leeds’.
Crash Records has now been part of the Leeds indie music scene since the shop first opened on Woodhouse Lane in 1985, a long 36 years ago, before moving to its current address on The Headrow two years later. Crash is a staple in the Leeds music scene, still hosting some of the largest vinyl collections and an even a ticket house for local music events. Check them out to satisfy your indie music needs. We kicked off our Imageco Indie Initiative giving Crash Records a lift with a new dibond facia sign and this brilliant desk wrap. Designed by Becca Kelly at first glance you would think it was actual records not print.
North Bar opened in 1997 and has served many different purposes to the people of Leeds over the years. At one point North was the UK’s top account for Kronenbourg 1664 and has since moved on to become the leading light for imported beers from the continent and the US. They now focus on their image as one of Leeds’ greatest indie bars where people can enjoy everything from beers and cocktails to some tasty dim sum.
Anyone who has spent any time wandering around Kirkgate market will have seen the iconic Marks and Spencer’s heritage stall. Placed in the same location where the M&S brand first started in 1884 and right next to the famous M&S clock, the stall offers visitors the chance to learn more by taking the M&S heritage trail through the city as well as purchase gifts and merchandise whilst enjoying a piping hot coffee.
Finally, anyone looking for some inspiration in the fashion department should look no further than Blue Rinse. The vintage, used, recycled and reworked clothing company opened in 1997 intending to create an ethical and forward-thinking business. This store really does have something for everyone from hand-picked vintage gems to some reworked staples. The store became so well known that you can even now find their ‘re-made in England’ collections in Urban Outfitters!
