Cooking up a Sustainable Retail POS Rollout

The Brief

The retail POS rollout campaign was centred around Hotpoint’s advert that was released earlier in the year. The story of the advert followed the birthday of Bailey, the family dog, showcasing the celebrations and the chaos that followed. The story intertwined the various appliances used to make the birthday possible from the oven that cooked the cake to the washing machine that cleaned up Bailey’s mucky paw prints. For the POS, the ambition was to recreate the kitchen from the advert to be used as an experiential store display, which would feature in stores across the UK. OneVoice delivered the artistic designs, and from there, our team were tasked with making a live display made predominately from cardboard.

A Kitchen Made from Cardboard

The back wall of the kitchen was a frame that consisted of four sections locked together to create a 3.6m (w) x 2.4mm (h) x 0.6m (d) display. This was accompanied by both a kitchen island and a header that featured golden letter balloons spelling ‘Happy Birthday Bailey’.
To establish the kitchen structure, we utilised 16mm Xanita board to create the main outer pillar and centre back panels. On the outer pillars we applied 5mm Foamex to add in balloons and Bailey cutouts to give the display a 3D effect. Additionally, we used the 5mm Foamex to build the ‘Happy Birthday Bailey’ header. To recreate the kitchen tops we once again utilised Xanita board, along with black coloured Foamex which was formed to replicate the oven hob.

Explore Cardboard Engineering

Sustainable POS

As the primary material used for this POS display was Xanita, cardboard engineering was an integral production method. To establish the display structure, our engineers employed CAD software to prototype the structure, conceptualising how the components of the frame would lock together using no adhesives. To add to this, our specialist cardboard engineers developed a solution that prioritised ease of transport, allowing each element of the frames to be flat packed. This was ideal for a retail rollout that resulted in 32 cardboard kitchens being delivered nationwide.

Our Sustainable Commitment

Efficient Print Production

As Xanita board and Foamex were the two key materials used throughout this project, we were able to utilise the swissQprint Nyala 4 flatbed printer for all prints. The swissQprint Nyala 4 printer enhances efficiency, with the printer being certified in ISO standard 20690 for energy efficiency, consuming an average of 2.2 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
Once the prints were established, we applied our Zünd cutter to cut the components based on the instructions and measurements set out in the CAD drawings.

Our Technology

Installing a Nationwide POS Rollout

Installing just one of these POS displays would have been impressive, but the fact that 32 identical kitchens of varying sizes needed to be installed ready for the same launch date, was as complex as baking a chocolate Souffle. Luckily, we like a challenge!
To seamlessly install the cardboard creations of Hotpoint’s appliances, we sought the help of our experts:
• Robert, who was the account handler liaising with the clients
• Simon, who organised the distribution and delivery
• Our floor team who collaboratively print, cut, and built the kitchens to the specifications of the CAD drawings
Over the span of three months, our team effortlessly produced and organised the installation of the retail displays, staggering the installation over one week, so all stores could coordinate the final reveal.
