Laying Beats & Brand Activations

As the home of dance music, it was only fitting that the interactive stand was moulded around the main attraction of the island. The ambition of this build was to engage tourists passing through the airport, with the installation as a form of brand activation for the end client who is a retailer operating duty-free shops in airports. The company wanted to drive customers to download their loyalty app and receive rewards, but they chose this innovative way to create a memorable brand experience. This DJ booth would include multiple screens both in front and behind the decks where users would play along with a bespoke DJ-themed game created by Superla, who specialise in creating gamification experiences.

As part of this collaborative project, our job at Imageco was to manufacture and install the booth, printing the graphics but also integrating all the crucial technical components that were essential for the delivery of the game. Whilst it may not have been the largest project we have delivered in terms of size, it definitely brought complexity, needing to encompass:
• 1 DJ controller with neon permitter
• 4 speakers
• Light boxes
• Multiple large TV screens
All of which needed to be safely encapsulated and compacted into the DJ booth. The booth would also have to prioritise durability due to the sheer volume of users who would be interacting with the game over its lifetime.

wearesyn developed the concept of the project and worked closely alongside Superla to design and create the game offering. Once this was established, they delivered the graphic renders that conceptualised the look and feel to our team, along with key technical requirements. From there, we utilised CAD software to build out the specific structure, using measurements of the build area available and each piece of equipment that would have to be precisely built into the booth. Our engineers transformed the visuals into working drawings that configured how the booth would be built to ensure it would be structurally sound and functional. The specificity that is delivered in the CAD stage allows us to prototype structures with clients and from there, seamlessly move into production. The calculations and measurements pass straight through to our CNC machines to manufacture with incredible accuracy.

For the manufacture of the DJ booth, we utilised our CNC machine, which specifically works with cutting wood and cuts to the measurements laid out in the CAD drawings. The main unit of the booth was an MDF material that was sprayed satin black, which was accompanied by light boxes on the side that included aluminium frames with tension fabrics that could be interchangeable. For the additional graphic print elements that were used on the booth, we applied our swissQprint Nyala Flatbed 4 printer which delivers vivid, high-definition graphics to elevate the look of the booth.

The final piece of the puzzle was the installation, and an international installation at that. The DJ booth was built off-site and then carefully driven by our team in a dedicated van from Leeds to Ibiza airport, to ensure the structural integrity of the build was maintained. From there, we rendezvoused with our installation team. Our specialist installation team expertly built this complex 3D structure whilst ensuring not to be disruptive to the day-to-day running of the airport. Aside from our print specialists, we brought in the support of electrical engineers to set up all the technology systems, such as screens and speakers. In total, the project spanned a month from design conception to installation, and the DJ booth will now remain a permanent installation at the airport.
