Sustainability may be shaping the future of exhibitions, but no brand wants to disappear quietly into the background.
Today’s sustainable exhibition stands are expected to do more than reduce environmental impact. They need to command attention, communicate clearly, and create a branded experience that feels every bit as premium as a traditional build.
Graphic design becomes the real game-changer here.
On a crowded exhibition floor, visitors make decisions fast. Research across the exhibition industry suggests brands often have between three and seven seconds to capture attention before attendees move on. In that moment, your graphics are doing the talking long before your team does.
For eco exhibition stands in particular, great design has the power to completely reshape perception, transforming lightweight, recyclable materials into immersive brand environments that feel considered, creative, and high-end.
Discover how quality graphics can take sustainable exhibition stands to new heights!
Traditional exhibition builds often rely on scale, lighting, and heavy structural elements to create impact. Cardboard exhibition stands work differently.
Because sustainable builds are typically lighter and more material-efficient, the graphics carry much more of the visual weight. Every colour choice, layout decision, and printed detail plays a role in how the stand is perceived.
At Imageco, we regularly work with environmentally conscious materials such as Xanita board, a lightweight, recyclable, non-toxic substrate designed for versatile display and exhibition applications. Combined with high-quality print production, materials like these allow brands to create exhibition spaces that are visually striking without the environmental compromise often associated with traditional builds.
Exhibition visitors don’t stop to read paragraphs; they scan.
The most effective eco exhibition stands are designed with this behaviour in mind. Messaging needs to be immediate, visuals need to be intentional, and the overall design needs to communicate the brand story almost instantly.
That usually means:
Industry guidance around exhibition graphics consistently points to simplicity as one of the biggest drivers of engagement on busy show floors. It’s not about saying less for the sake of minimalism. It’s about making every element work harder.
The strongest exhibition graphics don’t overwhelm visitors with information. They create curiosity first, then invite conversation.
Our dedicated design team works closely with brands to create exhibition environments that not only look visually impactful but also function effectively within the space itself. That means considering everything from visitor flow and sightlines through to messaging hierarchy, product placement, and how the stand will be experienced from different angles across the exhibition floor.
To ensure premium visuals, our cutting-edge print technology delivers crisp graphics, reflecting every vibrant pixel of the design. Our production capability includes advanced wide-format print technology such as the swissQprint Nyala 4 and HP Latex 830W, allowing us to produce sharp, high-definition graphics across a wide range of sustainable materials.
From bold colour consistency to detailed print reproduction and precision finishing, the technology behind the build plays a major role in how premium the final stand feels in a live exhibition environment.
For larger or more complex eco exhibition stands, our in-house CAD engineers play a key role in bringing concepts to life. Using digital prototyping and structural design processes, the team can refine layouts, test stability, and ensure every element of the build works cohesively before production begins.
This approach helps minimise unnecessary waste, improve installation efficiency, and create exhibition structures that feel considered from both a visual and practical perspective.
One project that perfectly captured the creative potential of eco exhibition stands was Imageco’s large-scale robotic cardboard build for Antalis at the VM & Display Show. Designed to challenge perceptions around sustainable materials, the stand centred around a giant 3.5-metre-tall robot named “Cardbot”, engineered entirely from Xanita board.

Imageco’s design and structural engineering teams developed detailed CAD drawings to establish how the robot and exhibition environment could be manufactured accurately and assembled efficiently at scale.
Beyond the robot itself, the wider 4m x 3m eco exhibition stand featured approximately 40sqm of printed Xanita board, alongside photographic-quality wall and floor graphics designed to create an immersive “outer space” environment. To achieve the final finish, the team utilised technology, including the swissQprint Nyala 4 flatbed printer, Zünd cutter, and Efi Vutek production printer
According to the project data, the completed stand achieved a carbon footprint of approximately 130kg CO2e, estimated to be at least three times lower than a comparable wooden exhibition build!
With the right combination of structural engineering, creative thinking, and precision print, sustainable materials can become the foundation for truly standout exhibition experiences.
For many businesses, eco exhibition stands are part of a wider sustainability strategy rather than a one-off design choice.
At Imageco, sustainability is at the core, from digital prototyping designed to minimise waste through to our zero-landfill policy. We also provide carbon metric reporting for print builds, helping clients better understand the environmental impact of their projects.
As more brands look for ways to reduce the footprint of live events and exhibitions, the demand for smarter, lower-impact display solutions continues to grow.
